Who Wrote the Quran? It must have been someone! However, how many desert Arabs have risen in human history and brought a book like the Quran to the world? The book contains amazing details about past peoples, prophets and religions as well as precise scientific details that were unimaginable at the time. So what was the source of all of this? If we deny the divine origin of the Quran, we have few options:
– The Prophet Muhammad wrote it himself.
– He took it from someone else. In this case, he took it either from a Jew or Christian or from a stranger in Arabia. The Meccans didn’t bother to accuse him of taking it from one of their own.
A short answer from God to this is:
“And they say: ´ (These are) fables of the past: he had them written down and they are dictated to him in the morning and in the evening.´ Say: ´He who is the hidden of the heavens and Earth knows, sent it down. He is truly Forgiving, Merciful.´ ”(Quran 25: 5-6)
It was well known to his slanderers that Muhammad, who had grown up among them from birth, had never learned to read and write. They knew who he was friends with and where he had traveled to; they admired his sincerity and honesty by calling him ´Al-Amiin´, the credible, trustworthy, honest. [1] Only in their rebellion against his sermons did they accuse him – and then they brought up everything against him that came to their mind in despair: he was described as a witcher, poet and even as a fraud! You couldn’t make up your mind. God says:
„See how they shape parables of you and are so wrong that they are unable to find the way.“ (Quran 17:47)
It’s just like this: God is aware of what is happening in heaven and on earth, He knows the past and the future, and He reveals the truth to His Prophet.
Could Muhammad have written it?
It is impossible for Muhammad to write the Quran for the following reasons:
First, there were various situations in which he could have invented the revelations. For example, after receiving the first revelation, people were anxious to hear more, but the Prophet received nothing new for months. The Meccans began to make fun of him: ‚His God has left him!‘ This continued until the 93rd chapter of Ad-Duha was revealed. The prophet could have invented something himself and presented it as his latest revelation to put an end to the mockery, but he did not. At one stage of his prophecy, a few of the hypocrites accused his beloved wife A’isha of behaving chastely. The Prophet could easily have made up something to rid them of the shame, but he waited for many excruciating days
Second, there are reasons in the Qur’an itself that Muhammad cannot be the author. Certain verses correct him, sometimes with harsh words. Why should a fraudulent prophet blame himself if it could cause him to lose respect for his followers as a result? Here are a few examples:
“O Prophet! Why do you forbid what God has allowed you to seek the satisfaction of your women? And God is Forgiving, Merciful. ”(Quran 66: 1)
“… and you hid what you held within yourself, what God wanted to uncover, and you feared people, while it is God whom you really should fear. ” (Quran 33:43)
„It is not for the prophet and believers to beg pardon for the idolaters, even if they were their closest relatives, after it became clear to them that those were hell.“ (Quran 9: 113)
“As for the one who comes to you eagerly [to learn] and who is God-fearing, you don’t care about him. Not so. Verily, this is a warning; so whoever wants to be aware of it. ” (Quran 80: 8-11)
If he wanted to hide something, he would have hidden these verses, but he recited them faithfully.“And he [Muhammad] is not stingy about the hidden, nor is it the word of Satan, the cursed. So where do you want to go? This is just a warning for all worlds. ” (Quran 81: 24-27)
The prophet is admonished, perhaps even warned, in the following verse:
“Truly, to you [O Muhammad] We have sent the book of truth so that you may judge between people as God has shown you. So don’t be an advocate of the unfaithful. And ask God for forgiveness. Verily, God is Forgiving, Merciful. And don’t stand up for those who cheat themselves. Verily, God does not love those who are deceivers, sinners. They want to hide from people, but they cannot hide from God; and He is with them as they prepare for reprehensible intrigue. And God knows what they are doing. So you have stood up for them in this earthly life. But who will stand up for them before God on the Day of Resurrection? Or who will be your protector? And whoever does evil or perpetrates against himself and then asks God for forgiveness, finds God Forgiving, Merciful. And whoever commits a sin commits himself; and God is omniscient, all-wise. And whoever makes a mistake or a sin and then blames an innocent person carries a defamation and an obvious sin. And had it not been for God’s grace and mercy, a crowd of them would have decided to mislead you. But they lead themselves astray; and they cannot harm you, and God has sent down the book and wisdom to you and taught you what you did not know, and God’s grace that He has shown you is really great. ” (Quran 4: 105-113)
These verses explain a situation in which a man stole some of the armor from Medina’s Muslim residents and hid it from the property of a Jewish neighbor. When the owners of the armor questioned him, he denied everything and the armor was found in the Jewish man. But he pointed to his Muslim neighbors and also denied any involvement in the crime. The people of the Muslim tribe came to the Prophet to plead for him, and the Prophet began to develop an affection for them until the verses cited earlier that released the Jewish man from the accusation were revealed. All of this happened despite the fact that the Jew denied Muhammad’s prophecy! The verses instructed Muhammad not to side with the cheater!
“… So don’t be an advocate of the unfaithful. And ask God for forgiveness … and if you hadn’t had God’s grace and mercy, a crowd of them would have decided to mislead you. ”
If Muhammad – God’s praise and peace be upon him – had written the Quran himself and was a lying deceiver, he would have ensured that there was nothing in it that would endanger the gaining of followers and supporters. Indeed, on several occasions the Quran corrects the prophet where he has made incorrect judgments, and this is to be seen as evidence that he could not have been written by him.
